What is a domain?

A domain name is the address used to visit a website. It’s what comes after the ‘@’ in an email address or after the ‘www.’ in a web address.

There are two parts to every domain name: the name and the extension. For example, the name could be thisisme and the extension could be .com or .florist. There’s now hundreds of domain extension options to choose from, which means there’s more opportunity than ever to create a meaningful and memorable domain name that tells the world more about you and what you do.

How do domain names work?

In order for your website to be found on the internet an IP address is created, which is a string of numbers. Just imagine asking someone to find your store or website by remembering a string of numbers. A domain name allows you to give your website a friendly memorable address, that interprets those numbers so that people can easily find you online.

What is domain hosting?

A domain host is an internet service that manages your domain name. Your domain host will use Domain Name System (DNS) records to connect your domain name with your email and website.

The main difference between a domain name and a domain host is that your domain name is the address, which allows customers to easily find your website online, while your domain host is where your website files are stored.

In order to have a functioning website, you need both – a domain and host.

There’s no need to worry about purchasing extra hosting packages from third parties. You’ll get safe, secure and reliable hosting included in your website when you sign up for any KitStart subscription.

How much does my domain name cost?

Which ever domain name you choose, the cost is already automatically included within your KitStart package. That means there is nothing else to pay except for your monthly or annual subscription to KitStart which will automatically be renewed along with your domain name each year.

Where can I find my domain?

As soon as you upgrade to a paid KitStart package you can search for your perfect domain within your KitStart account.

As part of your package you will automatically be provided with your domain and domain host, and your domain will automatically be connected to your website for you, without the need for you to do anything.

You can then publish your website and away you go!

What is an SSL certificate?

An SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate is a bit of code that provides security for online communications.

It keeps internet connections secure and prevents criminals from reading or modifying information transferred between two systems. When you see a padlock icon next to the URL in the address bar, that means SSL is protecting the website you are visiting.

Enabling your SSL certificate ensures any connection to your website is secure, authenticates your identity and boosts your search engine rankings. And, you don’t need to be a professional website builder to do this with KitStart – our ready to go website means all you need to do is turn it on!

Can I connect an existing domain to my new website?

Absolutely. You can easily connect any domain you own to your KitStart website using the website builder’s simplified domain mapping tools. Simply log into your KitStart account to get started.

What if I’m not ready to connect my website to my domain?

Don’t worry. You can find your domain and save it until your website is ready to be published. Then when you’re ready to go live simply follow the instructions in your KitStart account.
